Scientist or Senior Scientist, Molecular Biology/Microbial Physiology with BP

Advanced Bio & Physical Sciences for Low Carbon Energy (AB&PS) develops strategic and business solutions for new low carbon technologies and products. A recently created team, AB&PS is the central research organisation for biosciences, chemistry, chemical engineering science, materials sciences, biofuels, green hydrogen/electrochemistry and the science of carbon capture. This team also hosts bp’s capability in computational modelling of biosciences and chemistry.

The biological sciences are strategically important to bp. The bp Biosciences Center (BSC) in San Diego is the hub for bp’s biosciences R&D capability. The BSC works to identify current opportunities and assess future opportunities across the range of bp’s businesses, supporting bp’s ambition to reach net zero by 2050 or sooner. The Center stays closely connected to bp businesses and external technologies, and ensures the expertise required to progress opportunities through the early stages of technology development. The Center also advises businesses on biological issues and partnership opportunities. The team is comprised of flexible, agile, multi-skilled, innovative members that work collaboratively across the research portfolio.

AB&PS will work with all teams across Applied Sciences (AS), and will serve as the AS integration point with G&LCE including Zero Carbon Energy and H2&CCUS, and for RC&S. The AB&PS team will also interface with other teams in bp including Launchpad & Ventures, T&S, P&O and the wastewater group.

The Scientist or Senior Scientist of Molecular Biology/Microbial Physiology would be the expert in the field, supporting the biosciences programs, in particular in the analysis of experimental data (Genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and fermentation data) to guide pathway and metabolic engineering. The successful candidate will play a key role in our Synthetic Biology efforts applying state of the art technologies for gene expression and genome editing in various production hosts. The scientist will also participate in the analysis of metagenomes, genomes, and environmental samples.

The individual will join a group of interactive scientists and should have strong communication skills and outstanding inter-disciplinary problem solving and critical thinking skills, with a strong interest in the pursuit of scientific discovery. This position reports to the Synthetic Biology lead and requires hands on work at the bench (expected to spend ~70% of the time working in the lab) with a recent experience of delivering high quality experimental results. The scientist is also expected to draw from their expertise to provide additional guidance and input to organism development projects as well as to provide input on novel areas for study.

The primary accountabilities of the position are:

• Apply knowledge of microbial physiology and metabolism to guide metabolic and pathway engineering

• Design and conduct experiments to deliver high quality results to support biosciences research portfolio and biosciences capability building.

• Analyse and interpret genomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics and 16S rRNA data.

• Construct and optimize microbial strains by using state-of-the-art technologies for genome editing, DNA assembly, gene expression.

• Accurate record keeping of experiments and data.

Work as part of a multi-disciplinary scientific team to promote safety initiatives and champion compliance with bp’s Code of Conduct.

Education: PhD with post-doctoral experience in metabolic engineering, microbiology, molecular biology, cellular biology, synthetic biology, or related fields. Experience must be proven by a track record of publications

Essential criteria:

• Strong knowledge in microbial physiology and metabolism

• Hands on experience in analysing genome or metagenome sequencing data

• Hands-on experience in genetic engineering tools for gene expression and chromosomal manipulation

• Ability to analyse and interpret complex experimental data from various sources

• Ability to provide expert advice and innovation to develop solutions to complex technical issues

• Devote ~70% of their working hours in lab activities

• Must be motivated, possess excellent interpersonal skills, communicate well within and between teams and be able to work under tight deadlines

• Participate in project strategy development and implementation, including developing intellectual property

• Ability to prioritize responsibilities, show flexibility in response to changed priorities and work effectively in a multi-tasking, fast pace, and matrix environment.

• Strong organizational skills, being able to handle multiple projects at the same time

• Ability to work safely and independently with no immediate supervision. Adept at formulating new SOP’s as well as reliable and accurate execution of tasks following SOPs outlined by others
