The MDTP is committed to providing a competitive stipend to our students. For 2024-25, the annual stipend will be $36,000.
Prospective students should look at more than the stipend amount. We also provide –
- Outstanding health care benefits to our students (the same as faculty and staff).
- A low cost of living in Madison with a high quality of life.
Given this and the superior quality of science on campus, we think it’s impossible to find a better place for graduate training in microbiology anywhere in the country.
Ph.D. students at Madison are supported from a variety of different sources, including assistantships from departmental or research funds, university, national or department fellowships or appointments on the Molecular Biosciences, Biotechnology, or Cell and Molecular Parasitology training grants. Research funding is provided by the Graduate School for the cooperative microbiology graduate recruitment program of the two core departments.
Students are also eligible for various fellowships and training grants.

Note – our student support provides full tuition remission, but students are required to pay student fees. Here are the current fee rates and the campus services they support. NOTE – segregated fees are substantially lower for dissertators.
