Research Associate (Postdoctoral) Pathobiological Sciences
Requirements: PhD required in virology, microbiology, immunology or related field. Experience with viruses (preferentially RNA viruses) along with proficiency in cell culture, molecular virology, and molecular biology techniques. Past experience with antiviral assay development desirable, but not required.
Job Duties: The Kawaoka Laboratory studies negative-strand RNA viruses including highly pathogenic influenza viruses, pandemic SARS-CoV-2, and filoviruses including Ebola virus. Our objectives are to better understand virulence, pathogenicity, and viral evolution. In this way, we can help to develop better vaccines and anti-viral therapeutics. We have an opportunity for a postdoctoral associate interested in joining our team to identify, evaluate, and characterize antiviral compounds against filoviruses. The Kawaoka Laboratory developed a biological contained Ebola virus that recapitulates authentic Ebola virus but can be studied safely under non-biosafety level-4 containment. This unique research tool will be used to identify and confirm the antiviral activity of compounds that target essential filoviral proteins. The individual in this position will utilize a variety of molecular virology techniques (including reverse genetics) and should have the ability to develop novel assays to test compounds for their antiviral activity against a broad array of filoviruses. Some of these studies may be conducted in biosafety level-3 containment. The ideal candidate will be a productive, self-motivated individual with the ability to work as part of a team on collaborative projects. Strong basic laboratory skills and good technique are important. The individual in this position must present data in presentations, participate in meetings with collaborators and contribute to manuscripts. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) are a plus. To be considered, candidates must be eligible for and maintain Select Agent clearance. To apply, please email a CV, a letter of interest, up to three reprints, and the names of three references to Amy Kuehn (amy.kuehn@wisc.edu).
