A postdoctoral position on understanding the mechanism of human inflammatory oropharyngeal disorders is available in the Oropharyngeal Mucosal Immunology Unit in NIAID/NIH, headed by Dr. Kalpana Manthiram in Bethesda, Maryland. Our laboratory investigates inflammatory oral and tonsil diseases in patients as well as immune responses to respiratory pathogens in the tonsils and adenoids, using high-dimensional immunologic techniques. We then translate this mechanistic understanding to improve care for patients.
About the Position
We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to join our team in studying the mechanism of human inflammatory tonsil disorders, including a periodic fever syndrome called PFAPA(periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, adenitis), recurrent tonsillitis, and obstructive sleep apnea in children. Although these conditions are common, their causes and underlying immunological mechanisms are not well-characterized. Our unit’s preliminary data suggest unique immunologic features in the tonsils of patients in each of these conditions, and our lab aims to further understand the immunopathogenic mechanisms. The successful candidate will use advanced techniques in immunology such as spectral flow cytometry, cell culture and functional studies, single–cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and multiplexed imaging. The candidate will be responsible for leading innovative research projects including performing experiments at the bench, analyzing and interpreting data, preparing manuscripts for publication in high-impact journals, and presenting findings at national and international conferences. Additionally, the role involves mentoring and training junior lab members. Qualifications
Highly motivated candidates with M.D. and/or Ph.D. and strong background in immunology are encouraged to apply. Proficiency in a range of laboratory techniques, including flow cytometryand single-cell RNA sequencing, is highly desirable. Bioinformatic experience analyzing high dimensional data is considered an advantage. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to conduct independent research and possess a track record of scientific publications. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment, and well-developed oral and written communication skills, are essential.
